Auctions Sports & Americana Photograph Collection Sale

One of the hobby’s high-end collectors has chosen Legendary Auctions, a premier Sports & Americana auction house, to exclusively conduct the sale of more than 3 million incredible images of Sports and Americana. The extraordinary collection of photographs spans numerous decades, and includes significant figures from
various sports, poignant scenes from the turn of the century, entertainment icons, and other notable individuals and events in history including the Civil Rights movement. The massive photograph collection will be sold in several upcoming Legendary Auctions events, with the first scheduled to open for bidding on Monday, September 8 and close on Tuesday,
September 29 and Wednesday, September 30.

Doug Allen, president and CEO of Legendary Auctions, said he expects bidding and overall interest on the photographs to be high. “Photography has really found its place in collecting,” said Allen. “It is a relatively new niche that has just taken off. We have seen the prices realized on high-quality photos such as the ones we will be offering climb steadily during the last few years.”

While some attribute the appeal of collecting photography to nostalgia, Allen suspects that a much more contemporary trend may be at play. “We live in such a visual age, with an insistence on immediacy,” said Allen. “The need to ‘see’ instantly is paramount to how we work and enjoy our leisure time. Vintage photographs satisfy a collector’s desire to peer
directly into the subject’s past. It’s the immediate pay-off that is so in line with how we live today.”

According to Allen, the origins of the tremendous photo collection include several major media print archives.
Consequently, the collection includes numerous wire photos and frames that capture significant historical moments. “Buyers will be blown away by the quality and content of these photos,” said Allen.

The first auction featuring the photographs will include famous images from the archives of the Detroit News and Sport Magazine, as well as those framed by noted snapshot artists Charles Conlon, Barney Stein and Ansel Adams.

Allen said that what is most exciting about the photographs is the diversity of their subjects. “In one group you’ll find icons of baseball, in another pile there are stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. And then you’ll turn over another photo and it is the frame that captured the moment right after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King on the balcony of the motel
in Memphis. Collectively, the photos really are the proverbial ‘snapshot’ of the American experience,” said Allen.

With such inherent variety evident in the photos’ content, Allen expects there to be widespread interest in the photography auctions. “Realistically, no matter what someone collects, there is bound to be a pertinent photo in this September sale,” said Allen. “The sheer number of great photos available almost guarantees it.”

Because of the quantity of photographs Legendary Auctions will be selling in the coming months, the company will be developing an eBay presence, Legendary Photos, to further accommodate the sale of some of the more affordable images in the wide-ranging collection. “Typically, a photo in a regular Legendary Auction may run in the thousands,” said Allen. “Through Legendary Photos on eBay, still amazing but less pricey images will be available for a couple hundred dollars. The utilization of the eBay outlet will simply broaden the appeal and availability of these incredible photos and
ensure that they all find their way into collections.”

Additional details regarding the upcoming photographs in subsequent photo auctions will be released during the next few months. Direct Auctions expand with franchise roll-out

Direct Auctions, the Spanish based international property auction house, has recently launched its auction franchise programme.
Established in June 2003 by Inez Rix, Direct Auctions soon became the premier property auction house on the Costa del Sol (Spain), and over the next few years established itself as a credible alternative to the traditional property sales method, selling properties from all around the world, in addition to local Spanish homes.

Founder Inez Rix says, “We knew from day one that we had hit on a winning idea. People liked the honest and straightforward process, both from a seller and buyer point of view. In the height of the property boom companies were charging exorbitant rates of sales commission, so our no-nonsense sales fees made sense to everybody”. Rix goes on to say, “Direct Auctions has gone from strength to strength and in the current climate we are helping so many people find a solution to their property nightmare.”

Franchise Director, James Bowman says, “We have been developing the franchise programme for some time now and have already signed a number of new licensees. The market is right for us to capitalise on our franchise development and the concept works so well in almost any country or region. We’ve kept licence fees extremely reasonable and even offer flexible payment terms to allow it to be as accessible as possible.”

Aside of benefiting from the Direct Auctions brand, new franchisees also receive the Direct Auctions Franchise manual, on-site training, marketing material, business forms and a whole Direct Auctions business ‘tool kit’.

Direct Auctions is looking for potential franchisees in all areas, regions and countries that saw second home buying activity during the property boom, including Dubai, Cape Verde, Florida, Portugal, Costa Blanca, Ibiza and Bulgaria. The franchise may appeal to individuals or couples looking for an exciting business opportunity, or for existing real estate agencies looking for other revenue streams.

Licence fees start from 7995EUR per annum, with no profit share requirements, quarterly fees or other payments and the business is full re-assignable should a franchisee wish to sell on.

Further details can be found on our franchise site http://wwwdirect-auctions-franchise.com

Hawker Hurricane for Melbourne Auction

Bonhams & Goodman announced that it has consigned a fully restored 1940 Hawker Hurricane MkIIA, a former WWII fighter, for its Military and Aviation Collectables auction on 27 September 2009 in Melbourne.

One of only eleven airworthy examples worldwide, the Hurricane is a survivor of four major battle campaigns during the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. She was damaged and repaired several times before being struck by a shell in the winter of 1943 over the Murmansk area of the Russian Tundra. She was recovered from this area in 1991 and Wanaka-based aviation enthusiast, Sir Tim Wallis, purchased the plane a year later.

It was Wallis’ desire that the Hurricane be restored to original airworthy condition and Air New Zealand offered to undertake the project. This presented Air New Zealand Engineering Services (ANZES) with a marvelous opportunity to display their capabilities and to restore a historically significant and rare aeroplane in New Zealand. Alpine Fighter Collection Chief Engineer Ray Mulqueen oversaw this highly complex and long restoration.

The unsung hero of the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane was one of the most versatile fighters of World War II. Its first test flight was on November 6, 1935 and from the outset of World War II, the Hurricane proved its mettle. It was to become the nemesis of the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain being particularly effective against the Messerschmitt Bf110 heavy fighter. The Hurricane had exceptional maneuverability with tight turning radii and excellent gun aiming stability being the first eight gun monoplane fighter to be produced by Britain and the first fighter to exceed 300 mph.

Hurricanes served in France before and during the German Blitzkrieg, were prominent at Dunkirk and in the closing stages of the Battle of France. One particular squadron was based at Narvik during the last stages of the Norwegian Campaign. Aircraft from this squadron were lost when the carrier HMS Glorious was sunk.

One of the reasons that so few Hurricanes are flying today is the obvious lack of original tooling. Due to the complexity of the manufacturing processes originally employed by Hawkers, the UK seemed the logical place for this activity so the basic airframe was restored by Hawker Restorations in the UK. Main wing outer panels were restored at Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight. The aircraft was then returned to Christchurch in late 1995, where restoration to an airworthy condition continued until first flight on 12 January 2000.

The aircraft has been restored to configuration as a MkIIA with eight 0.303 caliber machine guns, and is displayed in the colours of Number 73 Squadron, France, 1940. Registration letters assigned to the aircraft are ZK-TPK which is significant because ’TP’ was the Squadron code, and ’K’ was the identification letter for the aircraft when serving with that Squadron.

“So rarely do fighter aircraft of this caliber and quality appear on the market. This is an interesting and exciting campaign to undertake and I am sure that a discerning buyer will take on the custodianship of this historically significant plane” says Catherine Davison, Specialist, Collectors’ Motor Cars at Bonhams and Goodman.

This is the first time a fully operational Hurricane has ever been offered for auction and it is expected to fetch between AU$2,000,000 - $4,000,000.
