Magellan Letter Auctioned at Ketterer Kunst in Hamburg

Very good results were achieved at the two-day Ketterer Kunst auction marathon in Hamburg. The evening auction alone achieved overall proceeds amounting to € 550 000*, topping an estimated sales volume of € 450 000. At approx € 1 300 000, the overall proceeds from the auction of Rare Books - Manuscripts - Autographs - Decorative Prints on 17 & 18 November 2008 match the results achieved at this year’s spring auction.

Fetching € 114 000*, the extremely rare original edition of a letter written by Maximilianus Transsylvanus, secretary to the imperial court of Charles V, achieved the highest price at this auction. In his letter, Transsylvanus reports to the cardinal-bishop of Salzburg on the circumnavigation of the globe by Ferdinand Magellan. A European dealer secured the book with a sealed bid in writing that would have left some scope for bidding up, thus surpassing the € 94 300* already achieved at Ketterer Kunst in 2004 for one of the four published editions of “De Moluccis insulis …”.

Van Dael and von Neff Paintings for Hamburg Auction

Carrying an estimate of € 60 000-80 000 and measuring 83 x 65.5 cm, “Früchte- und Blumenstillleben mit Insekten” [“Still Life with Fruits, Flowers and Insects”], was painted by Jan-Frans van Dael in 1814 and heads the Art of the 19th Century division at the auction of Old Masters and Art of the 19th Century/Marine Art at Ketterer Kunst. Works by this Belgian artist are in the Uffizi in Florence, the Louvre in Paris and at the Petit Trianon in Versailles.

Carl Timoleon von Neff’s oil painting of “A Young Mother” measures 148 x 117.5 cm and carries an estimate of € 50 000- 70 000. It is bound to resonate not just with Western Europeans but also with Russians. Educated at the Dresden Academy and Painter to the Court of Tsar Nikolas I, von Neff should be viewed in the same context as Karl Pavlovic Briullov and Feodor Bruni. Moreover, the Young Mother motif also reflects von Neff’s love for Italy, which he often visited. In the 1820s he met the Nazarenes there and was made a member of the Florentine Academy in 1846.
