eBay Sellers Access 3rd-Party Applications Within My eBay

eBay today made it easy for sellers to find and subscribe to third-party applications that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their eBay businesses. Available immediately through My eBay (my.ebay.com) for subscribers of Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro are about a dozen applications that have been pre-approved by eBay to be embedded on eBay.com. eBay anticipates steady growth in the number of tools available through the Selling Manager Applications platform to address specific needs of eBay sellers including: shipping, inventory management, sales tracking and customer support.
Announcement Highlights/Key Facts:

All Selling Manager applications are free to try. An app store for eBay sellers, third-party applications are subscribed to at My eBay (my.ebay.com) with eBay managing billing on behalf of third-party developers.
In April, eBay announced that it would no longer charge sellers to subscribe to Selling Manager, turning it into an open platform where third-party developers could embed their applications into my.ebay.com, allowing them to connect with sellers directly.
More than 96,000 third-party developers have already built more than 13,000 live applications that consume eBay’s Web services. These developers – along with new applicants – form the base of a vibrant developer community and expanding application marketplace.
Today’s announcement is also the latest milestone in eBay’s commitment to making it easier for sellers of any size to start, grow and maintain their business on eBay. In July, eBay rolled out enhancements for search relevancy, the automation and speed of the resolution process for unpaid items, new bulk editing tools, and an update to its highly regarded Seller Dashboard. These changes were part of the launch of the company’s Top-rated seller status, which is awarded to sellers that are ranked highly by their buyers through eBay’s detailed seller-ratings feedback system.
Sellers can access the applications directory for Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro by simply pointing their Web browsers to http://applications.ebay.com/. eBay’s Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro currently have 270,000 active subscribers in the U.S. and the tools can be accessed at http://pages.ebay.com/selling_manager and http://pages.ebay.com/selling_manager_pro.

IpAuctions, Inc. to Sell Medical Patents on Behalf of UAMS BioVenture

IpAuctions (R), Inc. will auction three medical patents on behalf of the Technology Licensing Office at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

The first patent (U.S. Patent #7,074,568) would enable the commercialization of a diagnostic test kit capable to detect Mycobacterium Other Than Tuberculosis (MOTT) and would produce a rapid diagnoses of infections in humans or animals.

Mycobacteria are persistent infections organisms that are involved in several of infectious diseases in addition to those involved in Tuberculosis. The rapid identification of mycobacteria is important to control these infections and their medical management. Arkansas investigators have developed a novel procedure that is PCR-based and is effective to diagnose Mycobacteria Other Than Tuberculosis (MOTT) infections directly from patient specimens in clinical testing. This method is far superior to classical testing methods and biochemical tests.

The second patent (U.S. Patent #6,993,377) discloses rapid multi-parametric methods of diagnosing heart disease. Specifically, this invention will predict impending sudden death, and analyze patients’ responses to treatments.

Roughly 12 million Americans are affected by coronary artery disease (CAD). In addition, 400,000 Americans die from sudden cardiac death each year. To date, no conventional diagnostic test can reliably predict which patients with cardiovascular disease are at risk for sudden death. The Struzik method of multifractal analysis was successful - yet, to date, no conventional diagnostic test (including highly invasive tests) can reliably predict which patients with cardiovascular disease are at risk for sudden death.

The salient novel features of the invention are:

1) Improved rapid method of MF Holder analysis with the associated
MFCC,
2) Rapid method of MF Alpha analysis,
3) Method of removing abnormal/ectopic beats that reduce
sensitivity/specificity of MF analysis,
4) Method of beat cluster analysis of value in predicting the
severity of abnormal/ectopic beats, and
5) Battery of 6 different diagnostic tests that may be performed on
a single EKG time series, which may have much greater diagnostic
and predictive value than that of each test alone.
The third patent (U.S. Patent #6,423,076) is a stereo tactic device for localizing an MRI-imaged mass using horizontal and vertical protractors on which a laser is mounted. This invention provides radiologists performing biopsies and ablations a visual guide reference for insertion of medical devices into a tissue mass that has been localized by magnetic resonance imaging. The laser apparatus is designed to guide surgical procedures based on location information derived from MRI imaging. This system can be adapted to any type of patient table used for delivering a patient to the bore of a MRI magnet or other imaging device. The device is battery powered and self contained, thus independent of any power requirements of the MRI system. After inputting angle measurements into the stereo tactic device, the radiologists are able to follow the laser beam with a biopsy needle to make consistent arrival at the mass site. Additionally, multiple pathways can be targeted from the same entry site or multiple approaches to the target.

eBay to Auction New Cars for General Motors

Vauxhall Motors’ parent company, General Motors of America, is to sell its new cars on eBay. The motor manufacturer has struck a deal with the online auction giant to pilot a scheme in California to test the water to see if this is a viable scheme to compensate for its falling sales. Some 225 of the 250 dealers General Motors has in California have signed up to the deal.

GM’s marques include Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Pontiac, and more than 20,000 new vehicles will initially be listed on the joint website gm.ebay.com. The pilot scheme will last until the 8th September, at which time GM will assess the success of the venture and decide if it is worthwhile to expand the activity. eBay already has an existing arrangement with GM, which was initiated in February 2008, to sell its certified used cars on the auction website.

The website allows customers to compare pricing across models and participating dealerships, negotiate prices and arrange finance and payment. As with other eBay items customers can pay the “Buy it Now” price or make an offer and haggle.

IpAuctions, Inc. to Sell Six Medical Patent Applications

IpAuctions, Inc. (www.ipauctions.com) will auction six pharmaceutical patent applications on behalf of pharmaceutical technology company Accu-Break Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ABP) (www.accubreak.com) of Plantation, Florida, United States.

The first of the available applications, entitled “Method of Treating Hypertension With A Very Low Dose of Chlorthalidone,” has a number of claims already allowed. Allowance of additional pending claims appears to be available by making minor amendments, such as changing the claim dependency. NIH-sponsored studies have indicated that chlorthalidone (CTD) is safer and more effective than hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and as a result, CTD became the diuretic of choice for a number of major NIH outcomes studies, including ALLHAT. CTD is approximately twice as potent as HCTZ and provides several day control of blood pressure compared to HCTZ, which is barely a once-a-day product. An opportunity to potentially provide a 6.25mg dose of CTD (especially in combination with a second antihypersensitive agent) would yield a product with an improved side-effect profile and efficacy. There are no low-dose CTD products on the market today, despite its proven safety and efficacy.

The second application is directed to “Methods of Treating Dialysis-Induced Hypotension,” and claims a novel treatment using an antihypotensive, e.g., midodrine, desglymidodrine, or the like. There is a present need for an effective treatment of intra-dialytic hypotension (IDH) that occurs in patients undergoing dialysis for acute renal failure. There is also a need for symptomatic treatment, in addition to the prophylactic use, of an antihypotensive agent to increase systolic blood pressure in a patient while undergoing dialysis. This application discloses novel methods of treating and preventing the serious and unpleasant syndrome of IDH in dialysis patients while undergoing treatment, including treatment for acute renal failure.

The third application is for “Compositions and Methods Using a Cardiac Glycoside.” This application claims methods and dosage forms using a low dose of digoxin or digitoxin in patients suffering from reduced creatinine clearance, renal insufficiency or chronic renal failure, and concomitant cardiovascular disease. The application is currently under a restriction requirement for election of the methods or dosage forms as described and claimed.

The fourth application relates to “Novel Compositions and Treatment of Type II Diabetes and Hypertension” and claims methods and dosage forms using a thiazolidinedione (glitazone) in combination with a thiazide or thiazide-type diuretic (e.g., HCTZ) to prevent or treat edema induced by the glitazone. This treatment is advantageous over the recommended withdrawal of glitazone administration following development of the side effect of fluid retention, and may be an effective alternative to the use of loop diuretics.

The fifth application is for “Compositions and Methods Using Torsemide” and claims clinical utility of low-dose torsemide, and dosage forms having novel score patterns that readily provide those low doses. Also included as part of the invention are products combining torsemide with antidiabetics, such as glitazones. These novel approaches can provide the advantages of lower doses (and consequent lower side effects) while providing greater dosing flexibility during treatment, e.g., a graduated dosing regimen in pre-diabetic patients.

The sixth application relates to “Compositions and Methods Comprising a Thiazide Diuretic and a Mineralocorticoid Inhibitor.” This application claims methods and dosage forms employing low doses of an aldosterone antagonist (mineralocorticoid inhibitor), such as spironolactone or eplerenone, and a thiazide, such as chlorthalidone, for co-administration or in a combination dosage form. The lower doses of active ingredient(s) allow for reduced side effects, including lower risk of potassium loss (hypokalemia), with additive or synergistic effects for treatment or prevention of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, heart failure, and related disorders.

ABP is selling the patent applications “because the focus and strategy of the Company has changed with the development of its innovative Accu-Break® tablet technologies,” explained Robert I. Goldfarb, President of ABP.
