Sydney Books Maps & Manuscripts Auction

The sale on Monday 11 May 2009 at 11am includes a comprehensive collection of Federation ephemera collected by Lt. R.R.Belknap whilst visiting Australia during the celebrations abroad the U.S. Flagship “Brooklyn”, over 56 items including many decorative & illuminated invitations with original envelopes and an illustrated invitation to the Royal Review at Flemington.

There are also three very good examples of Thomas a Kempis Imitation of Christ including an extremely elaborate edition showing early illustrations from the manuscripts in chromolithograph superbly bound by Tessier.

An interesting item is a silver cigarette case associated with “Trooper Bluegum” Oliver Hogue (1880-1919), who achieved recognition for his writing during the First World War. Hogue served at Gallipoli for 5 months and fought in the Battles of Romani, Magdhaba, Rafa and Gaza. Having survived the worst of the fighting in Sinai and Palestine, he died of influenza in London in 1919.

Also on offer is a collection of 70 lots of Australiana, art reference, collectables, prints & maps Of particular note is Angas’s South Australia Illustrated 1847, with 60 magnificent colour lithograph plates in very good condition. A number of limited art publications in the art reference in particular ‘New York Nowhere’ with 10 original etchings by John Olsen, published by the Littlewood Press in 1998 in an edition of 175 copies (illustrated).

There is good selection of early & fine printings, including an interesting 15th Century French folio manuscript of 344 folios on parchment (Incunabulum) being the revenue accounts of the Normandy Kings properties. Approximately 32 Lots from the Library of Max Dupain, mostly associated Art Books, but also a copy of John Browne’s ‘A Complete Treatise of the Muscles…’ Savoy. 1681.
