Mallet Japan Modern and Contemporary Auction Dec 5

Mallet Japan will be offering 2 paintings by Georges Rouault, one depicting a face of clown and the other capturing a profile of French poet, Paul Verlaine, each with an estimate of 7,000,000-10,000,000 JPY.

lot# 342 Clown (oil on carton laid down on cradled panel, painted circa 1945, signed by Isabelle Rouault on the reverse, 27 x 19cm) is drawn with heavy and bold black defining lines and glowing colours and beautifully represents the artist style which is suggestive of influence form his early experience as a glass painter. The theme is also something that Rouault often chose to adopt as part of moral and social criticism.

lot# 315 Etude pourle Portrait de Verlaine (oil on paper laid down on canvas, signed by Isabelle Roualt on the reverse, 57.8 x 43.8cm) also reflects the artist’s keen interest in human nature and sins that are brought about from within. This lead the artist to put an emphasis on personalities and inner self of the subject which can be seen in this portrait of self-destructive French poet as well.

The sale also features a special section dedicated to works by Mark Kostabi (Lot# 284-300). 2 sets of drawings and 15 paintings with estimates ranging from 150,000 to 700,000 JPY are to be offered.

Other highlights include Yasuo Kuniyoshi’s early prints collection (lot# 98, 1,000,000-1,500,000 JPY) which consists of 20 pieces of rare prints, either etchng or drypoint, in black and white from circa 1916-18 and 1 gouache on paper and 2 paintings by leading Japanese artist, Kumi Sugai (lot# 161 ‘Work’, 700,000-1,000,000 JPY; lot# 168 ‘Soleil Lac’, 1,400,000-1,800,000 JPY; lot# 179 ‘Cahier du diable’, 1,600,000-2,000,000 JPY).

The sale also covers a wide range of items from lithographs by Alphonse Mucha (lot# 199 ‘Les Printemps’ lot# 200 ‘Music’ lot# 201 ‘Painting’ lot# 202 ‘Poetry’ 350,000-450,000 JPY each) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (lot# 211 ‘Divan Japonais’, 2,000,000-2,500,000 JPY ) to painting by Marie Laurencin (lot# 322 ‘Jeune Fille au Ruban Bleu’ 5,000,000-7,000,000 JPY) as well as screenprints by such pop artists as Andy Warhol (lot# 258 ‘Mick Jagger’, 2,500,000-3,500,000 JPY) and Roy Lichtenstein (lot# 253 ‘WHAAM!’, 1,500,000-2,000,000 JPY).

Hong Kong Auction of Modern and Contemporary Asian Art

Ravenel Art Group is pleased to announce it’s first Hong Kong auction of Contemporary and Modern Asian Art on Monday December 1, 2008.

Ravenel Art, the leading art auction house in Taipei, will offer key works by leading artists in a number of categories in its Hong Kong Auction. In Modern Chinese Art which includes works by both Chinese and overseas Chinese artists, paintings by Sanyu, Zao Wou-ki and Chu Teh-chun will be offered. In the Chinese Contemporary section important works by Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi, Wang Guangyi, Yue Minjun and Yang Pei Ming will come under the hammer.

The auction will be held in the Four Seasons Hotel Ballroom, 8 Finance Street, Central, Hong Kong on Monday December 1. Previews will be held from 28 to 30 November in the Grand Hyatt Salon, 1 Harbour Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong.
