Museum Quality Antiques Including a Large Collection of First Edition Books

For book collectors across the globe, having the opportunity to own what is considered to be the largest Bible ever printed in English would be more than just an exquisite addition to their collection, it would mean owning a piece of Christianity history. On November 15th and 16th at the Ashmore Inn & Suites in Amarillo, TX, Kruse International will present the Early Oil Baron and Prominent Cattlemen Estate Auction where rare first edition books and many other prestigious museum quality antiques and artifacts will be up for auction.

The Macklin Bible, one of the world’s rarest books

Lot 737 is what Dean V. Kruse, President of Kruse International calls “the most significant and valuable item in the Oil Baron auction.” The Macklin Bible has seven volumes and was printed in London in 1800. Its folio printed size measures 18″ x 15″ and was dedicated to the King, Queen, Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, Princess Augusta and Princess Elizabeth. Thomas Macklin, famous publisher of the Poet’s Gallery commercial venture during the late 1700’s, took on the project to publish a multi-volume illustrated folio Bible to highlight “the glory of the English school of painting and engraving” by commissioning several artists which included Philippe James de Loutherbourg, an accomplished French painter. The final published Bible contains 71 full-page illustrations and many small vignettes.

William Thackeray and Victor Hugo

Lot 775 at the Oil Baron Estate Auction is a 1st Edition book set of twenty volumes entitled “Works of William Thackeray” in which the covers are signed by the author. The books are attractively bound in burgundy leather. Lot 845 is a leatherback book set of fifteen volumes published in 1881 by Estes, Boston, entitled “Victor Hugo’s Works”.

Book lot “Elliott’s Works”, published by Burt, New York, 1st Editions, “Lingard’s History of England”, (Lot#773), twenty-three volumes “Letters, Novels, Sketches & Poetry” of Robert Luis Stevenson, Scribner’s New York, 1902 (Lot#774). Forty-nine volumes “Harvard Classics” circa 1935 (Lot#797), twenty volumes museum reference (Lot# 789, 799), fifteen volumes, Cooper-Hewitt Museum (Lot#800), book set “Masterpiece of Mystery” by Ellery Queen (Lot#812), seven volumes “The Connoisseur”, 1904-1906 (Lot#810).
